Mad World - Gary Jules music video analysis

This is the music video to 'Mad World' by Gary Jules. I have chosen to analyse this video because i feel that the song expresses alot of my ideologies for the narrative of the video i would like to create. For the first 44 seconds of the music video only one shot is used, a high angle long shot. I think that this is a very unique and clever way to create meaning within a video as it is relying more on the ideas and ideologies of the creators rather then clever cinematography and editing techniques. The idea of the shot keeping still for so long reflects the calm and relaxed mood of the song. The protagonist of this video (Gary Jules) i seen through a long shot upon the rooftops. This shows how he is isolated from the rest of the world all alone. I would like to use this as a theme within my video to create audience sympathy for my protagonist therefore becoming more emotionally rapped up in the song. The mise en scene of Gary Jules's costume is very fitting with the world around him making him seem as if he belongs in that diegetic world thus creating a greater verisimilitude. I would like my protagonist to also fit in with the world around him which would add authenticity and make the narrative more believe able. However within this video the non diegetic song lyrics do not match with the images within the narrative. I feel that in my video i would definitely like to create something which matches to help emphasise the message within the lyrics. Overall i think that it is a good music video with creative and unique ideas. However i feel it could be improved with a much more interesting narrative and song lyrics which reflect the images on screen. These are elements which i plan to deploy within my music video.
